Kupuna Paws was inspired by my late dog, Oreo, who was adopted as a senior. He showed me the beauty of unconditional love and companionship in life’s final chapters.
Despite battling three aggressive cancers, Oreo was full of life—loving his walks and adventures. Every time we stepped outside, he’d bounce with his tail high, paws light, carrying all the joy in the world in him. Even after long walks, when it was time to turn back, he’d gently protest—standing firm with his shoulders and legs wide, refusing to move, just wanting a little more time. That quiet act reminded me how deeply our pets value connection and time outdoors—and how much love and life they still have to share, even in their final chapters.
As a registered dietitian, I’ve spent over eight years working closely with older adults—in skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, and adult day centers. I’ve seen how much companionship, purpose, and support matter in later life. The stories of elders having to say goodbye to their beloved pets have stayed with me. For many, their pet is their closest source of comfort, routine, and unconditional love. It’s heartbreaking how often that bond is broken—not by choice, but because they can no longer care for them alone.
Kupuna Paws was created to honor that bond. Because every kupuna and their loyal companion deserve more time, love, and joy together.
It’s a tribute to Oreo, to every kupuna and their pet, and to all who believe in walking beside them.
With gratitude,
Jenny Chung
